Tiraspol’s separatist leader Evgheni Shevchuk has openly admitted that the region will not be able to pay its debt for Russian gas in the next 10-20 years. Currently, Gazprom supplies the Transnistrian region with Russian gas, without demanding immediate payment, thus building a huge debt of over $ 5 billion.<\/p>\n

Evgheni Shevchuk said in an interview for Russian publication “Kommersant” that although technically the debt does not belong to the Transnistrian region (it belongs to the Moldovagaz, the Moldovan utility thas signed the contract with Gazprom), his administration is well aware that these debts belong in fact to the breakaway republic.<\/p>\n

“In spite of legal issues, we must understand that he who consumes has to pay,” said Shevchuk.<\/p>\n

Moldovagaz’s debt to Gazprom is currently 5.2 billion dollars. 90% of it belongs to the Transnistrian region, which hasn’t paid a penny to Gazprom in years, although the people do pay gas bills.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
