The Parliament of Moldova had a closed meeting on Tuesday, March 24, in order to discuss the report regarding the alleged theft of nearly 1.5 billion euros from three banks: BEM, Banca Sociala and Unibank.<\/p>\n

The leader of the investigation commission, Marcel Raducan, said that most of the documents are “state secrets”, so they should be classified, while the meeting should take place behind closed doors .<\/p>\n

However, the head of the Liberal Party, Mihai Ghimpu, and the Socialists’ leader, Igor Dodon, declared that the information from the report should be public and the citizens have the right to know the results of the investigation.<\/p>\n

“There are people directly involved in the stealing of one billion euros sitting there in the Assembly hall!<\/strong>“, said Dodon.<\/p>\n

“The techniques of stealing the money were prepared during more than one year. The legislation was changed in order to simplify the <\/strong>theft<\/strong> through loans.<\/strong> We firmly demand that the leadership of the Central Bank be sacked and put under investigation. The officers of the Anti-corruption Center and the prosecutors should be called to account and fired. The managers of the banks should be punished as well. The only solution to stop the worsening of the situation is the nationalization of these three banks”, demanded Dodon.<\/p>\n

The Liberals voted against the meeting behind closed doors and published their own report, while the Socialists protested by quitting the meeting. They were criticized by the leader of Communists, Vladimir Voronin, who accused them for using the situation to advertise themselves.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, the Liberal Democrats, the Democrats and the Communists voted for the the meeting to be secret, and Speaker Andrian Candu demanded the installation of jamming equipment.<\/p>\n

The meeting lasted approximately eight hours.<\/p>\n

The members of the Parliament decided to fire the Vice-Governor of the Central Bank, Emma Tabarta, and the President of the National Commission of the Financial Market, Artur Gherman.<\/p>\n

In 2014, BEM, Banca Sociala and Unibank were used to steal huge amounts of money through nonperforming loans given to new and unknown firms. The money was transferred in Russian banks and then to offshore accounts. Thus, about 17 -20 billion Moldovan lei were stolen and transferred abroad in euros or US dollars.<\/p>\n

Ilan Shor, a Moldovan businessman, Vlad Filat, the leader of the Liberal Democrats, and Vlad Plahotniuc, the Vice-President of the Democrat Party, are supposedly involved in these operations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
