The Central Electoral Commission from Comrat, the capital of the autonomy of Gagauzia, confirmed the victory of candidate Irina Vlah in the elections<\/a> of the bashkan, the autonomy’s leader. She won 51,01% (32 543) of the votes, thus winning the ballot in the first round.<\/p>\n

The runner-up was Nicolae Dudoglo, who was voted by 19, 05% of the people, and Valeryi Ianioglo, who was chosen by 7,96% of voters.<\/p>\n

Irina Vlah is a formally independent Pro-Russian candidate, a former member of the Communists’ Party, but now strongly supported by the Socialists. During the campaign, she has organized electoral concerts with the participation of Russian MPs and Russian singers.<\/p>\n

The voter turnout was 58,1%.<\/p>\n

In an interview for Deutsche Welle<\/a>, Irina Vlah said that it was not a secret that the Gagauz people are Pro-Russian.<\/p>\n

“Given that the region’s economy is based on agriculture and the food products are being sold on the Russian market easier than on EU’s, it is in our interest to have good relations with Russia. Now we are negotiating the reopening of the Russian market for grapes, peaches and food cans from Gagauzia. The central government from Chisinau ignores us and cuts our funds because we don’t vote the ruling parties”, Vlah told DW.<\/p>\n

“I am not going to obey the will of some ruling party. I represent the Autonomy of Gagauzia and they should not talk to me like to a party member. I say again, I am ready to put forward a set of proposals for those who are ruling the Republic of Moldova”, said Vlah.\u00a0Asked about the European values, the bashkan said that she accepts only three: good education, fighting against corruption and the rule of law.<\/p>\n
