The UK government is committed to promoting and protecting women\u2019s rights overseas. This year is the 105<\/span><\/span>th<\/span><\/span><\/sup> International Women\u2019s Day and the 20-year anniversary and global progress review of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (Beijing + 20), which set out a progressive international road map to promote and protect women\u2019s rights. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The United Kingdom directly supports these actions such as: non-discrimination and preventing violence against women, ending discrimination as a way to ensure women do not become victims within society, but instead are rightfully empowered. Last year, the Embassy has supported and promoted the global initiative to prevent sexual violence in conflict (https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/policies\/preventing-sexual-violence-in-conflict).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

So, this year, to mark International Women\u2019s Day, the British Embassy would like to introduce to you prominent British and Moldovan women who represent charitable organisations with a strong link to the UK and who make a valuable contribution to the welfare of ordinary Moldovans. They work in various areas, such as: children in institutional care, the health sector and supporting local communities. Below you will discover their views on the perception of women empowerment and how their example and experience could inspire other girls and women to make a positive difference. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

What does women empowerment mean for you:<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Liliana Rotaru, <\/b><\/span><\/span>Country Program Manager CCF Moldova<\/b><\/span><\/span>: \u201c<\/span><\/span>An empowered woman is an independent, confident, active and happy woman with plans and values and contribution in her family and community life.<\/span><\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

CCF Moldova (www.ccfmoldova.org)<\/b><\/span><\/span> is a Moldovan NGO and representative of the <\/span><\/span>Hope and Home for Children<\/b><\/span><\/span> UK (<\/span><\/span>www.<\/b><\/span><\/span>hopeandhomes<\/b><\/span><\/span>.co.uk<\/b><\/span><\/span>) in Moldova working on <\/span><\/span>de-institutionalization and reintegration of children into families. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Jane Ebel, project manager, HealthProm<\/b><\/span><\/span>:<\/span><\/span> \u201c<\/b><\/span><\/span>Women empowerment means encouraging, enabling and supporting women, to play a full, dynamic and rewarding role in society.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

HealthProm (www.healthprom.org) <\/b><\/span><\/span>is a UK charity <\/span><\/span>working to ensure that children with disabilities have the best start in life and among other things<\/span><\/span> offer music therapy<\/span><\/span> <\/b>to these children.<\/span><\/span> <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Clare <\/b><\/span><\/span>Downey, Founder of the Flying Pig project: \u201c<\/b><\/span><\/span>Empowerment means having the opportunities and the confidence to make change, without gender being an issue.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Flying Pig project <\/b><\/span><\/span>is a community – led project from the UK that runs a play scheme for children in 2 Moldovan villages (\u021a\u00een\u021b\u0103reni and Chirca from Anenii Noi) .<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

How and if being a women has helped you in your job?<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Sharon Eason, <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span>Co Founder, Shelter \u201cPilgrims international\u201d: <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBeing a woman is everything to me. I have wisdom, inbuilt intuition, nurture and compassion. I believe they are the gifts given to women to balance and complement the gifts given to men. Women bring qualities to a man\u2019s world that enhance, soften and build up. I love being a woman and celebrate the fact, daily!\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Shelter \u201cPilgrims international\u201d <\/b><\/span><\/span>is a UK faith based<\/span><\/span> <\/b>organisation that supports the local community from R\u00ee\u0219cani, in the Nort-West of Moldova by offering assistance to old people and also girls and women.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Irina Malanciuc, Director LUMOS Moldova: <\/b><\/span><\/span>\u201cB<\/span><\/span>eing a professional in what you are doing has nothing in common with the gender factor. The most important thing is to like your job, to work with dedication and responsibility, and to share your experience with others. My work at Lumos is directly related to child protection, which is generally considered to be a field where women\u2019s role is greater compared to men\u2019s role.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Lumos Moldova (www.wearelumos.org)<\/b><\/span><\/span> represents Lumos UK and <\/span><\/span>works to support children in institutions to regain their right to a family life and to end the institutionalisation of children.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Diana Covalciuc, Director, Tony Hawks Centre: <\/b><\/span><\/span>I don\u2019t think I had any advantages being woman, having three children and working as paediatrician. In fact, these things have decreased my career opportunities, compared to my men colleagues. However, my greatest challenge as a woman was managing the construction site of the new building of the Tony Hawks Centre.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI am fortunate that my father always encouraged me to do any type of job that interested me. I have never hesitated to try to succeed in any work I have done, and never felt less able than the men I have worked with simply as a result of being female. I do think every individual has different strengths and weaknesses, whether male or female.<\/span><\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

EASST (www.easst.co.uk) <\/b><\/span><\/span>is an independent UK-registered charity working in Eastern Europe and South Caucasus to facilitate cross-border projects on sustainable transport and road safety.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

What is your biggest achievement?<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Raluca Muntean \u2013 Jetha, Fundraising Director, Hospice Angelus Moldova: <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cManaging with the help of a small team and lots of volunteers to fund-raise locally, in Chisinau over 85.000 euro in order to support the continuity of Hospice Angelus’ palliative care services that had 2400 beneficiaries (terminally-ill adults and children with life-limiting conditions) in 2014 alone.\u201c<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Hospice Angelus Moldova<\/b><\/span><\/span> (www.hospice.md) which is a partner of Hospice of Hope from the UK (www.hospicesofhope.co.uk) is the leading provider of palliative care in Moldova by <\/span><\/span>offering medical, social and psychological assistance to advanced and terminal ill patients.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Samantha Sandu, <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span>Pastoral care: <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMy biggest achievement is just being me! I am the woman that God created me to be before the foundations of the world and He has a plan and a purpose for my life. I am living out His will for my life along with my wonderful husband and 3 beautiful children.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Samantha Sandu<\/b><\/span><\/span> is British and decided to move to Moldova with her family and contribute to the development of the local community in Cornesti, Ungheni (in the West of Moldova). <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Victoria Dunford, <\/b><\/span><\/span>Director and Founder MAD-Aid (<\/b><\/span><\/span>www.madaid.co.uk<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span> ): <\/b><\/span><\/span>\u201cEverything I have done in my life so far I consider a huge achievement starting with obtaining a degree, and getting to the point where I run my own business in a country (the UK) where 8 years I go I couldn\u2019t even communicate their language. But still the best achievement in my opinion is helping hundreds of disabled people and children receiving their first wheelchair.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
