Ex-Prime Minister and former first vice-president of the Liberal Democratic Party, Iurie Leanca, summoned a press conference today and announced his resignation from the party and the initiation of a new political project. The reason he put forward is that he and PLDM leader Vlad Filat were now \u201don different paths\u201d. Leanca denounced the Liberal Democrats’ decision to form a minority government with the Democrats and voted by the Communists, claiming that this step betrayed the party’s constituency.<\/p>\n

“When we travelled through villages, we clearly promised our voters a European direction, without Communists. Now, we’ve betrayed their expectations and broke our promises. I didn’t know the party would be rushed into the Communists’ arms”, said the former Prime Minister.<\/p>\n

Leanca himself had initially been nominated to head a minority government – Leanca II, but today he made it clear that he had only accepted the idea because he hoped that a parliamentary majority would be formed between the three pro-European parties: the Liberal Democrats, the Democrats and the Liberals. According to him, he would have resigned if he had been voted without the backing of a PLDM-PD-PL alliance. He also insisted that he didn’t ask the Communists to vote for him, but merely discussed the governance program with them.<\/p>\n

The former head of the government went on to explain that he supported Chiril Gaburici’s nomination as candidate for the seat of Prime Minister, but in the end didn’t vote for him in the Parliament because of the abovementioned reasons (Gaburici was voted with the help of the Communists and without the participation of the pro-European Liberals). Leanca promised he would observe carefully the work of the new government.<\/p>\n

While criticizing Filat and the rest of the Liberal Democrat leadership, as well as the Communists, Leanca was conspicuously silent about PLDM’s partner in the minority government – the Democrats.<\/p>\n

As regards his new party, Leanca will announce in the upcoming weeks who is joining him and how the party will be funded, as well as its political program. He promised the party would be financed transparently and democratically, by its supporters and not by any oligarchs from the shadows.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
