In the Republic of Moldova, the demand for foreign currency was twice higher than the supply in January on the Foreign Exchange Market. The NBM’s (The National Bank of Moldova) data show that demand for the foreign currency was 151 million dollars, while the supply was 71 million dollars.<\/p>\n

Lucia Had\u00e2rca, the head of NBM\u2019s Department of the foreign exchange operations, has announced at a press conference that the coverage of the foreign exchange market of the demand was 47%. In order temper the demand for currency in February, National Bank intervened on the foreign exchange market with 87 million dollars.<\/p>\n

Had\u00e2rca mentioned that this is the only reason which leads MDL depreciation.<\/p>\n

Another cause of the national currency devaluation was diminishing of the transfers, which consists over 20% of exports. According to the NBM’s officials, it has been also recorded the migration of MDL deposits into the USD or EUR, what creates pressure on the currency market.<\/p>\n

Lucia Had\u00e2rca also mentioned that she hoped to reach an adjustment in the near future for demand of foreign currency and its balance, and then MDL would begin to be appreciated as it was in crisis of 2009.<\/p>\n
