Promo-LEX and several international organizations that defend human rights wrote an open letter to important officials to inform about the harassment targeting the human rights defenders from the break-away region of Moldova, Transnistria. The letter was addressed to the PM of Moldova, PM of Russia, the American Ambassador, as well as to the OSCE Mission and UN representatives.<\/p>\n

The report<\/a>\u00a0states that the pressure made by the so-called ”government” from Tiraspol on human rights defenders intensified in 2013-2014. Beside the cases of daily intimidation, the defenders have been intimidated through official threats, trials and sanctions.<\/p>\n

Here are some real cases targeting the representatives of civil society:<\/p>\n

Human rights defender Stepan Popovschi was persecuted by the Tiraspol administration for his attempts to\u00a0defend the property rights of thousands of residents of the region, and to hold public meetings. In March 2013,\u00a0the activist\u2019s home was searched, and a \u201ccriminal\u201d file was opened against him.<\/p>\n

Defense attorney Vladimir Maimust has been harassed for his professional activities. In September 2013, an\u00a0attempt was made to take his life, when an explosive device was placed in his personal car.<\/p>\n

Journalists and human rights defenders Nicolae Buceatchi and Luiza Dorosenco were accused of ”subversive”\u00a0activities in Transnistria and inciting hatred towards the current authorities.\u201d These accusations were showed\u00a0in several videos published on YouTube in May 2014. Their complaints to the local investigatory bodies were\u00a0ignored and were not followed through with.<\/p>\n

On 5 December 2014, human rights defender Alexandru Zubco was banned access to the Transnistrian region.\u00a0He was detained at the checkpoint in Bender and his car searched. After approximately 30 minutes,\u00a0representatives of local security services (KGB) informed him that he was banned from the region, as his\u00a0presence in Transnistria was \u201cnot welcome.\u201d<\/p>\n

In June 2014, Alexandru Zubco sued the Transnistrian security service in a court in Tiraspol for a ban imposed on his personal car in April 2014. The court rejected the application several times, invoking formal reasons. The application was finally admitted in October. In his application, the plaintiff requested that the ban be lifted. \u201cI did not hope for a fair justice in the region, so I submitted the application namely to see how the mechanism of defending human rights works in Tiraspol. The hearing was set for 5 December, so I was on my way to Tiraspol to go to court,\u201d said Alexandru Zubco.<\/p>\n

Moldovan constitutional authorities informed Alexandru Zubco that the illegal KGB structures have been monitoring him in connection with his work with Promo-LEX. Alexandru Zubco has been with Promo-LEX since 2007 and is an active promoter of human rights, well known at the national and international level.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The NGOs say that even if Russia signed with Moldova an agreement on freedom of movement, speech and press, the separatist authorities continue to harass and to threat all the independent points of view in order to make them silent.<\/p>\n

The associations call the superior officials from Russia and Moldova ”to use effective measures to protect the human rights defenders, to condemn the persecution in Transnistria”, and they demand from the Western officials to offer ”financial aid on the criteria of human rights standards”.<\/p>\n

The authorities of Transnistria, the separatist region of Moldova, are known for controlling all the domains of the public life, including the press, the civic society, but also for punishing those whose opinions embarrass them.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
