For the first time, every colour of the rainbow was displayed in the central streets as hundreds of activists, friends, and families marched together in unity and equality. For the last four years, the Pride Festival in Belgrade had been banned due to major security concerns and violence. This year, however, the government committed to providing adequate protection for the participants and ultimately allowed the March to take place.<\/p>\n<p>Freedom of assembly is a fundamental human right but citizens must have the government\u2019s support and protection when exercising this right. Security reasons cannot be an excuse for preventing citizens from exercising their right to freely and peacefully assemble. It is not LGBT persons who instigate the violence and threats during such events, but as a result of others\u2019 actions, the community unfortunately is not able to fully exercise its rights in this regard.<\/p>\n<p>In her speech to the Belgrade Pride participants that day, GENDERDOC-M\u2019s Executive Director, Anastasia Danilova, emphasized the importance of the event, not only for Serbia but also for the whole region. \u201cIt\u2019s not the final step and it\u2019s not the main goal \u2013 just to organize a March \u2013 we don\u2019t even know if it will take place next year. But it is a step forward and we need to continue \u2013 all together \u2013 this important work of promoting the rights of the LGBT community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Independent journalist and human rights activist from Moldova, Oleg Brega, also participated in this historic event. Brega hopes that next year participants will feel more secure and that there will be less of a need for so much security on the streets. \u201cPeople should feel comfortable and confident to march freely and display the rainbow flag,\u201d says Brega.<\/p>\n<p>LGBT persons in Serbia, Moldova or in any other country do not ask for exclusive rights, but rather for equality. That is why such events and marches are organised\u2014to show the public that there is a need for greater equality and respect.
