How do you feel about the recent changes in Moldova?

Well, I see prosperity increasing, I see it in people themselves like a sparkle. My first arrival was at dusk, it was almost dark and during the drive from the airport into town, I saw that many of the lights were not operating and it wasn’t very bright. Now I see the constructions, even at at the airport, I see the lights are bright and that is more important, I see more people that appear to be happy. My last visit was during this summer and I saw that people were happy like in America: they were happy to participate in activities, to buy things like anyone else and some were doing their business as usual.

As we live in Moldova, we don’t appreciate or we don’t notice the changes, but it ‘s really nice of you to mention all the changes that happened.

Let me say, Moldova is one of the cleanest countries in the world. I’ve visited countries with more economic potential and with more economic growth rate than Moldova, but people from Moldova have pride of who they are, of I don’t see exactly everywhere. I realized that part of the changes are from those who work abroad and their remittances. We would like them to have well-paid jobs within Moldova, but the economy doesn’t allow this at the moment.

A Moldovan economist told me in early 2014 that the economic product will grow by 7%. That is very significant. If Moldova continues the growth of 7%, there will be prosperity in all the domains.

I think the Millennium Challenge money spent on the highway built recently and on the irrigational systems that will help Moldova to evaluate its agricultural potential through products for European market. People will see the coming progress. I know it is not coming fast enough, it’s been a frustration for me, but I think a positive economic change is still a change.

The elections are coming. What do you think about the politics in Moldova?

Well, these elections won’t change much the major top leadership of the country. I’m pleased that Secretary Kerry and several American Senators had been in Moldova to express the US support under any circumstances to the people, to the government. The US Senators may change, but there are both Democrats and Republicans who see and will see Moldova as a good friend. So, we will support you on the path of the European Integration anyway. The military aid may change in a long-term range, but infrastructure aid from the US will be permanent for the sake of peace and stability. We wouldn’t be concerned about Ukraine, if we weren’t concerned about any Russian expansion into Moldova.

North Carolina is probably the state where it is known very well about Moldova and that has the closest relations with Moldova.

Yes, more than anywhere else.

So what should be done that Moldova be known in the entire America?

Even this morning we had a discussion about Moldova House. We intent to do some festival-type activity, that will help people to learn about Moldova. I attended one international tasting that featured Moldovan wines, which we bought for a fundraising event, but I think we need exclusively Moldovan wine tastings to help people understand the quality of the products you have. I personally know some wine dealers that will be able to organize a Moldovan night and artists, manufacturers from Moldova that can present Moldovan products in a good way.

I know these are small steps, but solid ones.

Why do the United States, such a big country, want to support a small country, as Moldova?

Because the people from Moldova are wonderful. Because the people were oppressed in the past. Democracy benefits lots of people and we want Moldova to be able to stable and peaceful in the future. We want to do whatever we can do to keep Moldova from being another taken country because when you are small, it is hard to defend yourself. Independent economy can be marvelous and democracy can overtake the corrupt structures of the government.

Speaking of corruption, how do you think Moldova can fight the problem of corruption, the biggest problem?

Moldova needs strong laws and education of the public to understand that corruption is unacceptable. People need to understand that those who accept bribes will be punished. Trials need to be based on the case, and not on friendships, money.

So, having a strong rule of law, an open, transparent government, educating the people and the elected leaders showing good examples may be the ways to fight corruption.

European Union invested and is investing a lot in Moldova. Even though, the Moldovan society is divided into Pro-Western and Pro-Eastern folks.

Well, it has to be with the European Union. With EU you know that the standards and the laws will be expected and followed and the corruption will be at the minimum. That means that rules will not be changed arbitrarily and will be based upon reason. As long as some(Russia) say bad things about and don’t buy products from Moldova, that is not going happen with the EU. It levels the playing field and it allows lots of opportunities that are based upon innovative efforts rather than upon arbitrary, biased or punishing attitudes.

Russian TV channels of propaganda are very popular in Moldova.
