For months after the EU has lifted visa requirements for Moldovans travelling to the Schengen zone, 201,714 citizens of Moldova travelled visa-free.<\/p>\n

More than half (109,857 citizens) left the country via Romanian border and Chisinau International Airport, holding new biometric passports that did not carry a Schengen visa or any other travel documents.<\/p>\n

According to border police, most of travelers chose to cross the border at Cahul checkpoint, which recorded 47,983 persons. This is followed by Leuseni checkpoint, which was used by 17,903 citizens and other 17,880 persons, who traveled to Schengen countries via Chisinau International Airport.<\/p>\n

Border police reported that 69 citizens of Moldova, holders of biometric passports, have been denied entry in Schengen because they did not fulfill the entry requirements. At the same time, other 34 Moldovans have had a travel ban in Schengen due to previous law violation in these countries, while 36 have been repatriated, since they were residing illegally in the Schengen zone.<\/p>\n

Those who are denied entry could not justify the purpose of their travel or provided contradictory statements when reasoning their scope, according to border police.<\/p>\n

\u201cOften citizens cannot justify their trip,\u201d the spokesperson of Moldovan border police, Raisa Novitchi told Moldova.ORG. \u201cMoreover, they do not possess the amount of money necessary for the duration of stay; do not have a reservation or a return ticket. When visiting someone, they do not know the person or their exact address. This way they are being suspected of traveling to seek jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n
