The event was attended by Moldovan Prime Minister Iurie Leanca, his Romanian counterpart Victor Ponta and EU Energy Commissioner G\u00fcnther Oettinger.<\/p>\n<p>The first transit of natural gas from Romania will be undertaken on September 1.<\/p>\n<p>The interconnector \u201cIasi-Ungheni\u201d is 42 km long, being the only pipeline that links Moldova to the EU\u2019s energy resources. The pipeline has a transportation capacity of 1 billion m3\/annually. This covers about 1\/3 of Moldova\u2019s needs.<\/p>\n<p>The project was sponsored by the EU, Romania and Moldova.<\/p>\n<p>Up until now, Moldova was fully dependent on imported natural gas from Russia.<\/p>\n<p>Moldova joined EU\u2019s Energy Community in 2010. The project intends to extend the EU internal energy market to EU neighbors.<\/p>\n<p>EU Energy Commissioner Oettinger said the integration of Moldova in EU\u2019s energy infrastructure \u201cis very important.\u201d According to him, the sides will continue to consolidate their relations by cooperating in electric power sector in the near future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will ensure the highest level of energy independence of the Republic of Moldova,\u201d Commissioner Oettinger said.<\/p>\n<p>Chisinau-based authorities said a pipeline that will connect Ungheni to capital Chisinau is also expected to be finished within two years.
