The Republic of Moldova celebrates Wednesday 23 years since it gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. On the occasion of this holiday, several events are taking place both in Chisinau and throughout the country.<\/p>\n

President Nicolae Timofti, Premier Iurie Leanca and his cabinet have laid flowers at the monument of Stefan the Great, a prominent historical personality in Moldova\u2019s history. Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta also participated at the event.<\/p>\n

Nicolae Timofti said that the country\u2019s European integration is the only option that can bring progress, security and welfare.<\/p>\n

\u201cWithin the EU, partner states respect and help each other and do not impose embargoes overnight,\u201d the president said, referring to Russia\u2019s embargo on several Moldovan products amid economic association with the EU.<\/p>\n

According to him, Moldova enjoyed solidarity from the EU, the USA and the entire international community, helping the country to overcome the negative effects of the Russian embargo on wines, fruits and canned vegetables.<\/p>\n

In his speech, Premier Leanca said that the last 23 years have not been easy, the country having to deal with several challenges and issues.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday, the Republic of Moldova is situated on its well-deserved place along with the democratic states of Europe and world,\u201d Premier Leanca said.<\/p>\n

He added that the Moldovan society needs to strengthen its national unity.<\/p>\n

\u201cRegardless of residence, ethnicity or language, we are all citizens of the Republic of Moldova,\u201d Mr. Leanca said. \u201cTherefore, we have the mission to contribute to the country\u2019s development.\u201d<\/p>\n
