Moldova has inked the\u00a0Association Agreement with the European Union in Brussels on Friday. The signing comes after the accord has been initialed in Vilnius in November last year.<\/p>\n

The Association Agreement includes the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area (DCFTA), which is expected to lift any trade barriers between Moldova and the EU.<\/p>\n

The deal will deepen Moldova\u2019s political association and economic integration with the EU.<\/p>\n

\u201cFollowing the signature much work will remain to be done on domestic reforms,\u201d the EU said in a press release. \u201cIn this area, the EU and each country will cooperate on: strengthening the rule of law, advancing judicial reforms, fighting corruption, ensuring respect for fundamental rights and freedoms and strengthening democratic institutions.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Agreement will be implemented provisionally even before the 28-EU member states and the European Parliament will ratify it.<\/p>\n

The provisional application will start on the first day of the second month after both Moldova and the EU have fulfilled the required procedures on their side.<\/p>\n

Moldova and the EU have started negotiations over the Association Agreement in January 2010. The accord replaces the EU-Moldova Partnership and Cooperation Agreement which entered into force in July 1998.<\/p>\n

According to independent studies, Moldova\u2019s exports to the EU are likely to increase by 16% and imports from the EU by 8% as a result of cooperation under the provisions of the DCFTA.
