A human rights activist and journalist from Moldova, Oleg Brega was attacked by unknown, masked men. The incident happened on a street in Chisinau on Saturday evening.<\/p>\n

Mr. Brega said he was attacked with pepper spray and hit in the face with the feet. The journalist, who works for Curaj TV, believes that the assault is linked to his activity as a human rights activist in the community and over the Internet.<\/p>\n

Human rights NGO, Hyde Park said in a statement that it condemns the violent attack on Oleg Brega.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe strongly believe that this offence is directly linked with his journalistic, civic activity and his dynamic involvement in the problems of the community,\u201d the NGO said.<\/p>\n

According to the Hyde Park, \u201cthe attack was most probably motivated by hatred.\u201d The NGO calls on law enforcement authorities in Moldova to conduct a thorough investigation of this offence.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe sincerely hope that the authorities\u2019 involvement will prove critical in diminishing the pattern of violence towards human rights activists in Moldova, especially since Moldova is seeking recognition as a developing democracy within the European Community,\u201d the Hyde Park said.<\/p>\n

This attack on journalists comes a day after another reporter working for Deschide.MD news portal was taken in police custody and his office was searched.<\/p>\n

According to law enforcement, he is being suspected of blackmailing and corruption. However, the newsroom claims that the incident is a well organized retaliation of the Ministry of Interior.<\/p>\n

The police said that the journalist has allegedly obtained discreditable information about several public persons from a person who administers a database with private information and state secrets.<\/p>\n

Several media watchdogs have expressed their concern with the taken into custody of Mr. Ungureanu and the searches conducted at the office of Deschide.MD.<\/p>\n
