They fled the Syrian conflict and sought refuge in this country. Four years after their arrival in Moldova, Sultan speaks Romanian fluently. He has learned it in a Romanian language summer camp that lasted six months. Now, he attends school together with his Moldovan classmates and friends.<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-391311\" src=\"http:\/\/www.moldova.org\/old\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/ziua-refugiatilor-6-300x260.jpg\" alt=\"ziua refugiatilor 6\" width=\"300\" height=\"260\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have integrated very well,\u201d the 12-year-old boy from Syria said. \u201cMy friends accepted me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sultan is not only a regular pupil in the sixth grade. He has succeeded in attaining high scores at the regional Olympiads, in subjects such as English and Geography. People who know him have only words of praise, regarding him as smart, respectful and kind.<\/p>\n<p>Aurelia Rosca, the Deputy Mayor of Mereni village from the Anenii Noi district, said that all children of refugees who came to Moldova have good results at school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am proud of them and I love them very much because they are extraordinary children,\u201d Ms. Rosca said. \u201cThey are cheerful, kind and educated. They have registered great achievements in their studies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Like many other refugees in Moldova, Sultan and his family live in Mereni. This is the village that hosts most of the refugees and asylum-seekers who now live in Moldova. With the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and local authorities\u2019 support, they have been given accommodation free of charge for up to five years.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2001, people around the world mark World Refugee Day on June 20th.<\/p>\n<p>Moldova joined the 1951 Refugee Convention in 2002 and the 1954-1961 Statelessness Conventions in 2012. UNHCR has opened a headquarters in Chisinau in 1997 and has been providing assistance to those in need ever since.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.moldova.org\/old\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/ziua-refugiatilor-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-391307\" src=\"http:\/\/www.moldova.org\/old\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/ziua-refugiatilor-2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"ziua refugiatilor 2\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Octavian Mohorea, the head of the UNHCR National Bureau said that integration seems to be the most difficult task given the economic challenges Moldova faces.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is difficult to find a house, a job,\u201d Mr. Mohorea said. \u201cEven if one finds a job, the income does not cover the basics. It is a bit difficult, but we do our best to help the refugees\u2019 efforts to integrate in the Republic of Moldova.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Over the last 10 years, more than 1,000 people have received some form of protection in Moldova. The beneficiaries originated from 31 states, mainly from Armenia, Syria, Afghanistan, Turkey and Sudan.<\/p>\n<p>The Government of Moldova has established a special body \u2013 the Office for Migration and Asylum &#8211; that deals with issues encountered by refugees and those in refugee-like situations, such as asylum-seekers, stateless people and other categories.<\/p>\n<p>According to Iulian Popov, spokesman of the Migration and Asylum Office in Moldova, there are integration programs for those seeking protection in the country. The programs include language courses, assistance in finding a job and the possibility to live at the Centre for asylum-seekers for the duration of the program, which lasts half a year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince February 10, 2012, when the Asylum Convention entered into force, over 400 people [seeking protection] came to us,\u201d Mr. Popov said.<\/p>\n<p>There are 93 officially-recognized refugees in Moldova at the moment. Other 200 people are beneficiaries of humanitarian protection, while 76 people are asylum-seekers. The number includes stateless people, too.<\/p>\n<p>Iulian Popov said Moldova is prepared to deal with a high refugee flow should that ever be the case. According to him, there is a mechanism of temporary protection that can by granted by the Government if the number of those in need exceeds 100,000.<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-391306\" src=\"http:\/\/www.moldova.org\/old\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/ziua-refugiatilor-1-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"ziua refugiatilor 1\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Currently, Syria is the top country generating refugees in Moldova, followed by, surprisingly, Ukraine. Over 20 requests from Ukrainian people seeking asylum have been registered up until now. However, none of them have been recognized yet, their applications being currently examined. The applications come from former residents of Crimea, Kiev, Odessa and Eastern regions of Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>More than 50 million people are currently registered as having been forcibly displaced, including 16 million refugees worldwide. This is the highest number of refugees and people in refugee-like situations in the post-WWII era.<\/p>\n<p>Dima Dyri is a woman in her 40s and left her Syrian city of Aleppo in 2010, seeking shelter and protection in Moldova.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have war in our country. We cannot stay long there because it is very dangerous,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Dyri had previously travelled to Moldova when she was a student, majoring in pharmaceutical studies 15 years ago. Now she has a temporary Moldovan ID card and free accommodation in Mereni. She pays only for utilities and thinks that she will be able to find a job here. The woman is thankful that her son, who has diabetes, gets free medication.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t ask for more,\u201d she said. \u201cIt is more than enough for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>By Valeriu Gonta.
