People in Moldova and other former Soviet republics commemorate 73 years since the first deportation wave on Friday. Deportations began shortly after the USSR occupied Bessarabia (former part of Romania) in 1940.\u00a0\"monument_depoartati_1\"<\/p>\n

According to encyclopedia \u201cThe A to Z of Moldova\u201d by Andrei Brezianu and Vlad Spanu (2010), \u201c3,470 families, with a total of 22,648 persons labeled as “anti-Soviet elements”\u2014mostly landowners, merchants, priests, and members of the urban bourgeoisie\u2014were deported to Kuzbas, Karaganda, Kazakhstan, and other faraway parts of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR).\u201d<\/p>\n

The deportations were marked by atrocities and exterminations. Many people also died as a result of hard labor work, malnutrition and diseases.<\/p>\n

According to the same source, on June 13-14, 1941, over 300,000 people were deported to other regions of the USSR. Similar operations were held also in Ukraine, Belarus and the Baltic countries.<\/p>\n

These were not the only crimes committed by the USSR during those times. Two other deportation waves followed in 1949-1951 and 1955. Statistics show that over half a million of people from historic Moldova were forcefully displaced.<\/p>\n

Politicians in Moldova laid flowers at the Deportation Memorial from Chisinau on Friday and held a minute of silence to commemorate the victims of the communist deportations.<\/p>\n
