The latest \u201c5+2\u201d talks over Transnistrian conflict settlement concluded in Vienna on Friday with hopes that next negotiations, especially those scheduled to take place in Freising, Germany next week, will bring more outcomes.<\/p>\n

According to a press release of the OSCE, which is a mediator in the conflict settlement format, the sides agreed to start dismantling works of the Ribnita-Rezina cable car. It used to link the two towns but now it poses a threat to the people living in the neighborhood.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe discussed the practical follow-up to the agreements previously reached; I hope that the work to dismantle the Rybnitsa-Rezina cable car is starting soon,\u201d the Special Representative of the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office for the Transnistrian Settlement Process Radojko Bogojevi\u0107 said.<\/p>\n

He welcomes Russia\u2019s initiative to lead the project. A protocol decision on dismantling the cable car was signed in Odessa, Ukraine in May 2013.<\/p>\n

The sides also discussed issues concerning the freedom of movement of people, goods and services and the situation of the farmers in the Dubasari region. The farmers were denied access by the separatist authorities to their private land a few months ago.<\/p>\n

Among other topics of concern was the intensification of cooperation between law-enforcement structures, as well as the situation regarding the Moldova-administered Latin-script schools in secessionist Transnistria.<\/p>\n

\u201cGiven the difficult current political and security situation in the region, the holding of these talks with such diverse participation is sending a positive signal about the potential for decreasing tensions in Eastern Europe,\u201d Ambassador Bogojevi\u0107 said. \u201cIt is encouraging that the parties demonstrated a constructive approach and willingness to keep working towards the conflict settlement.\u201d<\/p>\n

The next \u201c5+2\u201d talks are scheduled for July 17-18 and they will take place in Vienna, Austria.<\/p>\n

Before this meeting, the sides are expected to gather in Freising for the Conference on Confidence-Building Measures in the Transnistrian Settlement. The conference is organized by the OSCE Mission to Moldova with the support of Germany.<\/p>\n

Conflict background<\/strong><\/p>\n

Transnistria is an internationally unrecognized entity proclaimed in Tiraspol on September 2, 1990, initially styled the Moldavian Transnistrian Soviet Socialist Republic. Currently known as the Moldavian Transnistrian Republic, this breakaway entity consists of a narrow strip of land (180 km by 32 km) nestled between the east bank of the Nistru River and the border of Moldova with Ukraine, on a small part of what used to be, between 1924 and 1940, the Moldavian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, the historians say.<\/p>\n

In 1992 escalated a conflict between Moldova and Russia over this territory. A cease-fire was signed the same year by president of Russia Boris Yeltsin and president of Moldova Mircea Snegur. An agreement to withdraw all Russian forces from the trans-Nistrian districts of the Republic of Moldova was signed by Moldovan Prime Minister Andrei Sangheli and Russian Prime Minister Victor Chernomyrdin in 1994.
