The European Union \u2013 Moldova gas interconnector is expected to be functional by mid this year. The announcement was made Thursday by the European Commission amid a joint meeting in Brussels between the President of the EU Commission Jose Manuel Barroso and Moldovan Prime Minister Iurie Leanca.<\/p>\n

Moldova is 100% dependent on Russian gas imports, having no storage capacities, no access to liquefied natural gas and no energy links with any EU member states.<\/p>\n

The 42-km-long interconnector Iasi-Ungheni, which will connect Romania to Moldova, will supply the country with 1 billion m3 of gas per year. This amount will cover about 1\/3 of the gas consumption in Moldova.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the following weeks we will finalize this accord to guarantee gas supplies to Moldova and ensure its further integration on the internal energy market of EU,\u201d Jose Manuel Barroso said. \u201cMoldova is member of the Energy Community and should have access to supplies from our internal market, if they want this.\u201d<\/p>\n

EU has contributed with 7 million Euro to cover over 25% of total costs of this project.<\/p>\n

After the Iasi-Ungheni pipeline will be opened, Moldova plans to extend it towards the capital Chisinau. A new 130-km-long pipeline is planned to be built.<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
