Should Moldova sign the Association Agreement with the European Union, Russia will \u201creview\u201d its economic relations with the former Soviet republic. The statement was made by Putin\u2019s envoy for Transnistria, Dmitry Rogozin, in an interview with Russian newspaper Kommersant<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will not have the previous relations anymore,\u201d Mr. Rogozin said. \u201cI will push for reviewing the economic relations with Moldova if [the country] will go for association.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to him, the political and economic association of Moldova with the European Union, which is expected to take place in late June, will affect Moldova\u2019s status of neutrality.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am convinced that the association with the EU means changing the neutrality status of Moldova,\u201d the Russian official said.<\/p>\n

He believes that there is a precondition for EU accession \u2013 joining NATO, Moldova not being exempted from this \u201crule.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis rule will not be changed for Moldovans,\u201d Mr. Rogozin said. \u201cAll countries had to go through this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dmitry Rogozin paid a controversial visit to Moldova\u2019s secessionist region of Transnistria on May 8-10. On the way back to Moscow, Moldovan authorities have confiscated boxes with petitions from residents of the breakaway region seeking independence and annexation by Russia, boxes which were carried in the Russian delegation\u2019s jet. Moldova said this move was illegal.<\/span><\/p>\n

Furthermore, the Russian officials had a hard time departing from Moldova, as Ukraine and Romania have barred Mr. Rogozin from entering their airspaces. Several subsequent postings on Twitter by the Russian official have stirred anger among politicians in Moldova and Romania.<\/p>\n
