A brief war over this region was fought between Moldova and Russian soldiers in 1992, leaving more than 1,000 casualties behind. The Russian-speaking region has organized a referendum in 2006, which favored joining Russia. The plebiscite was not recognized by the international community.<\/p>\n<p>Chairman of the Transnistrian Supreme Soviet Mikhail Burla said in a statement on the de facto institution website that the region uses the principle of small steps, the first one already being made. The stages he intends to follow are the recognition of the region as independent state and joining Russia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have taken the first step. Then we will see,\u201d Mr. Burla said.<\/p>\n<p>The self-appointed chairman said that he supports the \u201ccivilized divorce\u201d of 1993 between the Czech Republic and Slovakia.<\/p>\n<p>The legitimate government of Moldova, based in Chisinau, said that the appeal of the self-appointed bodies in the eastern side of the country is a \u201cdirect defiance of the Transnistrian conflict settlement process and Moldova\u2019s territorial integrity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Moldovan executive added that the request filed by the illegitimate authorities of Transnistria is a \u201cunilateral and counterproductive action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, Moldova calls on Russia to issue a prompt reaction \u201cin full compliance with the norms and principles of international law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russia did not set a date yet to examine the request.
