Human rights activist in Transnistria risks being sent to jail"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading Time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p>Andrei Rezanov, a young activist from Transnistria, the head of the human rights NGO \u201cEquitable Justice\u201d based in Tiraspol, is likely to be sent to jail in the separatist region of Transnistria because he \u201cwent against the system.\u201d The man issued an open letter about his case calling on the international community to get involved.<\/p>\n<p>Andrei Rezanov tells that on April 11, 2009 he was detained by the police officers of Bender and was hosted in the basement of the temporary prison.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey issued a criminal record on my name within three days, being accused of a very dangerous crime,\u201d Mr. Rezanov said. \u201cI did not admit such guilt, being clear that we talk about a fabricated case.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to him, he was convicted to 15 years in prison by the Bender court in May 2010. The man was suspected of being a drug dealer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey put pressure on me and obliged me to admit the guilt,\u201d he said. \u201cThey didn\u2019t give me water, they didn\u2019t turn on the light for days, they didn\u2019t let me sleep and I was in the position to admit something I haven\u2019t done. Any attempt to contest the Court\u2019s ruling did not lead to any results.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Andrei Rezanov stayed in prison in Hlinoe jail from Grigoriopol district for four years. During this period he filed several request to the local and international community, denouncing the human rights violations in Transnistria.<\/p>\n<p>The young man was freed on January 21, 2014.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Court in Grigoriopol has ruled unexpectedly that they can change my term in prison,\u201d Mr. Rezanov said. \u201cSubsequently I was named the leader of the \u201cEquitable Justice\u201d organization which deals with human rights of the detainees from Transnistria. I received several complaints about the disastrous conditions from prisons as well as illegal convictions. However, I was recently told that the ruling was illegal and there is order to be sent back to prison.<\/p>\n<p>The man says the Grigoriopol court will make its retribution tomorrow, April 4.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey will send me to prison; they will take a decision which does not favor me. I see this move as a pressure put upon me as well as upon our organization. I call on authorities and international community to get involved,\u201d said Mr. Rezanov in a comment for Moldova.ORG.<\/p>\n<p>The Promo-LEX Association attorneys addressed in 2012 a complaint to ECHR on Andrei Rezanov\u2019s case. In February 2013, the ECHR has informed the Governments of Moldova and Russia about the case.<\/p>\n<p>Promo-LEX attorney Alexandru Zubco believes that this case proves once again that any attempt to protect human rights in the Transnistrian region is impossible, being hindered by the local administration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is pressure on the activity of this NGO which seeks to defend the rights of some categories of people from the region,\u201d Mr. Zubco told Moldova.ORG.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Rezanov hopes that ECHR will bring justice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do not want the culprits to be punished,\u201d he said. \u201cI do not seek to ruin anyone\u2019s life.
