The United States of America says it is proud that Moldova joined the international community\u2019s efforts to condemn Russia\u2019s annexation of Crimea in a non-binding resolution adopted last Thursday (March 27) by 100 countries at the UN General Assembly.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are enormously proud that the United States and Moldova stood together just last week in the UN General Assembly in condemning the annexation of Crimea, condemning the Russian occupation of the peninsula and speaking out in defense of rule of law and in defense of sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine,\u201d U.S. Assistant Secretary Victoria Nuland said in Chisinau on Sunday.<\/p>\n

The text, adopted with 100 votes in favor to 11 against and 58 abstentions, highlights that the independence referendum held in Crimea is invalid and cannot form the basis for any alteration of the status of Crimea or of the city of Sevastopol.<\/p>\n

As Reuters reported, Moldova and other former soviet states would have faced pressure from Russia to vote against in the General Assembly. According to the source, the targets of Russian threats were directed towards Moldova, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and several African states.<\/p>\n
