European Union should not grant the Republic of Moldova a European membership perspective because it does not fulfill any criteria yet. The statement was made in a comment for Moldova.ORG by Christian L\u00fcth, spokesman of the Alternative f\u00fcr Deutschland<\/a> (AfD) (in English: Alternative for Germany) Party.<\/p>\n

\u201cMoldova does not fulfill any criteria of the Maastricht Treaty at all,\u201d Christian L\u00fcth said. \u201cThat would be a problem for both sides, for Moldova and for the EU.\u201d<\/p>\n

Founded in 2013, AfD describes itself a centrist party, and its policy is directed against Euro as currency for Germany. However, the party is not against the European Union itself. Their political platform claims that Germany should leave the Eurozone and reintroduce the German mark.<\/p>\n

Despite criticism on Moldova, the party believes that the Association Agreement would be beneficial for both sides.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a big step forward economically for Moldova; for the EU it is important to gain more influence in this region,\u201d the party\u2019s spokesperson said, adding that any step should be concerted together with Russia.<\/p>\n

Asked about ways to fight corruption, Mr. L\u00fcth said that is a complex problem for any society. He suggests a stronger rule of law, a better education and economic conditions in Moldova.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn the long run it is only possible to win the fight with better education and an increase of wealth through economic growth. On the short run a strong rule of law is surely necessary,\u201d the AfD spokesperson said.<\/p>\n

He added that the EU reacts \u201cprecipitately\u201d in the Transnistrian conflict resolution process. He suggests that the EU should become more active but only along with Russia.<\/p>\n
