Liberal lawmakers propose to the Legislative to examine a possible leave of Moldova from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). The Liberals claim that the basic principles of CIS have been violated by the Russian Federation, following the annexation of the Crimean peninsula of Ukraine.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cConsidering Russian Federation\u2019s insistence not to respect the provisions of the international accords, especially of the Establishment Accord of the CIS, as well as respecting Moldova\u2019s European integration efforts, we believe it is the right time to denounce the CIS Accord, which no longer corresponds to the current needs,\u201d said the draft law issued by Liberal Valeriu Munteanu.<\/p>\n

There are currently 10 member states in the CIS community. Moldova ratified the CIS charter in 1994, being a member ever since.<\/p>\n

Political expert Viorel Cibotaru told Moldova.ORG that it is not the most appropriate moment now to leave the CIS.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is good to have such a draft law, but it will not have support,\u201d analyst Cibotaru said. According to him, the CIS membership does not foil Moldova\u2019s effort to sign the Association Agreement and to modernize.<\/p>\n

\u201cI believe that Ukraine is in a position today in which we are not,\u201d the expert said. \u201cShould Ukraine leave the CIS, it would have to restore all bilateral relations with the other CIS member states. There are no direct advantages, maybe only electoral benefits. This exit would be very unproductive both economically and politically.\u201d<\/p>\n
