Moldova will request a clear membership perspective from the European Union and will ask for a rapid signature of the Association Agreement. The statement was made by the President of Moldova, Nicolae Timofti in a joint press conference with his Romanian counterpart, Traian Basescu which took place Wednesday in Iasi, Romania.<\/p>\n

Mr. Timofti asked President Basescu to support Moldova in this regard.<\/p>\n

Mr. Basescu underlined his support for the neighboring country, noting that he will raise this question during the European Council summit that is due to take place on March 20-21 in Brussels.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe expect from the European Council not only sanctions for the Russian Federation following the illegitimate annexation of Crimea,\u201d President Basescu said, adding that \u201cRomania will also bring into debate the situation in the Republic of Moldova.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to him, Moldova\u2019s European future can be sped up by allocating more resources from the European Union.<\/p>\n

\u201cNobody said the level of membership requirements should be lowered, but the solution would be more support for Moldova in order to help her walk faster the necessary path for integration,\u201d Mr. Basescu said.<\/p>\n

Being asked about the government session that is expected to be organized in Moscow on Thursday discussing the situation in Transnistria, Moldovan President said that he hopes the results will not be worse than the ones in the Crimea case.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t expect a decision in favor of the Republic of Moldova, but we hope it won\u2019t be worse than the actions undertaken in Crimea,\u201d Nicolae Timofti said. \u201cWe hope that Russia will change its position as a result of the critics and actions coming from the European Union.\u201d<\/p>\n
