Women empowerment and gender equality is one of the priorities of the civil society and government in Moldova for 2014.<\/p>\n

On International Women\u2019s Day, celebrated every year on March 8th, twenty nine media organizations in Moldova have committed themselves to respecting and promoting the principles of gender equality and women\u2019s human rights in their journalistic work.<\/p>\n

According to a press release of the United Nations mission in Moldova, a Gender Knowledge Gateway – www.egalitatedegen.md – will be launched on March 25. The website is designed to serve as a one-stop-shop for gender resources and knowledge in the areas of Economic Empowerment, Violence against Women, Women in Leadership and Gender Mainstreaming and Gender Responsive Budgeting.<\/p>\n

The Moldovan cabinet will conduct a series of talks about issues faced by women on March 11. Also the Parliament is expected to address the problems of Moldovan women, especially those living with or affected by HIV, Roma women and girls, women victims of violence, women with special needs, older women, women entrepreneurs, and women leaders.<\/p>\n

United Nations helped Moldova to develop an action plan for promoting Romani women in the context of the elections this and next year. Moreover, a report on the situation of Roma women and girls in Moldova will be published on March 20.<\/p>\n

\u201cWomen’s representation in decision-making in all spheres of life is fundamental for ensuring gender equality and fully representative democracy. Gender equality is an issue not only for women and girls, but also for men and boys as Moldovans choose the future they want,\u201d said Nicola Harrington-Buhay, UN Resident Coordinator in Moldova.<\/p>\n

According to the UN, women in Moldova comprise 53% of economically inactive population and some of them experience discrimination on the labor market. Only 19% of Moldovan lawmakers are women and 17% are representatives at district municipal councils.<\/p>\n

Statistics show that women in Moldova are performing most of the unpaid work – for example, household chores that are not remunerated in cash – that is not \u201caccounted for.\u201d Women also spend twice as much men do for child care.<\/p>\n
