Roma was one of the most marginalized minority groups in Moldova in 2013, facing constant societal discrimination, a U.S. State Department report <\/a>on Human Rights revealed.<\/p>\n

\u201cRoma had lower levels of education, more limited access to health care and higher rates of unemployment than the general population,\u201d the study showed.<\/p>\n

NGOs estimate about 250,000 Romani people in Moldova, including 100,000 persons of voting age. The same organization said the many Roma refused to identify themselves as such in the national census of 2004, which registered only 12,271 Roma in the country.<\/p>\n

The Country Report on Human Rights Practices for 2013 revealed that the literacy level among Roma community was below the national average.<\/p>\n

\u201cAccording to official estimates, one in five Roma could not read or write. Romani NGOs estimated that 80 percent of Romani children were illiterate. Approximately 43 percent of Romani children between the ages of seven and 15 did not attend school,\u201d the report stated.<\/p>\n

Poverty, lack of money to buy clothing and school supplies and inability to pay school expenses and fees leads to school nonattendance of Roma children. Another finding is that Roma children are segregated even in schools. There are cases when Roma studied separately from non-Roma pupils.<\/p>\n

Only 4% of Roma had a higher education degree in 2013, compared with 38% of non-Roma.<\/p>\n

The report said that Moldovan authorities lack an effective mechanism designed to address vulnerable families whose children were not able to attend school.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
