Over 750,000 Moldovan citizens hold a biometric passport which complies with the EU standards required for visa liberalization. Some other 2 million people still have regular passports. Holders of the latter ones will not be able to travel visa-free to the Schengen zone of the European Union once the visa regime is lifted.<\/p>\n

Starting from January 1, 2011, authorities in Moldova issue only biometric passports.<\/p>\n

A spokesperson of the Ministry of Information Technology and Communication told Moldova.ORG that 242,000 biometric passports were issued in 2013. From the beginning of 2014 until February 20, some 22,000 citizens have got their biometric passport.<\/p>\n

Employees of \u201cRegistru\u201d \u2013 Documentation Service Provider issuing travel documents \u2013 is facing a slight increase in applications for biometric passports after EU lawmakers promised a visa-free travel in EU\u2019s Schengen zone starting from this summer.<\/p>\n

The European Commission initiated the EU-Moldova Visa Liberalization Dialogue in June 2010. The last assessment report said that Moldova has fulfilled all the benchmarks set in the four blocks of the second phase of the VLAP.<\/p>\n
