European Parliament condemned human rights violations in Moldova\u2019s separatist region of Transnistria. Following a half-hour debate on Thursday on the latest human rights abuses in the region, the main parliamentary groups issued a joint resolution deploring \u201cthe increased administrative pressure being exercised by the self-proclaimed authorities in Transnistria towards Romanian teaching institutions, and calls for greater involvement of the EU in solving this conflict in its immediate neighborhood.\u201d<\/p>\n

The debate follows after headmaster of \u201cLucian Blaga\u201d high school from Tiraspol \u2013 the only Romanian-language school in the city \u2013 was retained and questioned by militia of Transnistria on Wednesday. The principal was detained together with his school accountant and driver. They have been released a few hours later, but they had their money, mobile phones and school stamp seized.<\/p>\n

The money was supposed to pay the teachers\u2019 wages after the separatist regime has blocked the bank accounts of the educational institution.<\/p>\n

Six Moldovan peacekeepers were also detained the same day.<\/p>\n

In their resolution, the MEPs called on the OSCE \u201cto continue its monitoring and negotiation facilitation activities and to defend the right to education of the students of the Romanian-language schools in Transnistria.\u201d<\/p>\n

Romanian MEP Renate Weber said during the plenary that discrimination and intimidation are threatening the region.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is unacceptable for the right to education to be used as a means of pressure in the geopolitical games of the self-proclaimed authorities in Transnistria,\u201d Ms. Weber said. \u201cEducation should be depoliticized and any type of harassment against Romanian teaching schools should stop.<\/p>\n

She suggested that a delegation of the European Parliament should travel to Transnistria to make sure that the right to education is respected.<\/p>\n

Dutch MEP Marietje Schaake called on Russia to stop committing abuses and withdraw its troops from Moldova\u2019s Transnistrian region.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Russian Federation should implement the judgment of the ECHR and stop violating the right to education. Russia should also withdraw its troops to end the climate of intimidation and fear in the region,\u201d Ms. Schaake said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
