The voting was expressed on Sunday in a referendum that was deemed illegal by a high court in Chisinau and another one in Comrat \u2013 the administrative town of the region.<\/p>\n<p>According to the chairperson of the so-called Gagauz electoral commission, Valentina Liscic, 98.47% of people said they want to join the Customs Union. Moreover, some 97.22% said that they are against Moldova\u2019s current European integration process.<\/p>\n<p>A separate question asked whether Gagauzia should become an independent state, should Moldova lose its sovereignty. Almost 98.9% said \u2018yes.\u2019 The turnout was about 70.42%, which represents 70.777 people.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Liscic said these are preliminary results and data from a few other polling stations have not been submitted yet.<\/p>\n<p>The illegal referendum was not seen with good eyes by the central authorities in Chisinau. Prime Minister Iurie Leanca said in a statement for <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.europalibera.org\/content\/article\/25251564.html\" target=\"_blank\">RFE\/RL<\/a><\/strong> that the plebiscite was a defiance of law.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, what happened in the autonomy is a defiance of law,\u201d Iurie Leanca said. \u201cIt is about the territorial integrity of the state and respect of law,\u201d Iurie Leanca said.<\/p>\n<p>The Premier admits that more communication between Chisinau and people in the Gagauz region is needed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have learned for several years now that the South has been less favored,\u201d Mr. Leanca added.<\/p>\n<p>The three ruling parties have issued a joint statement on Monday, saying that the so-called referendum was a politically motivated act.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe action itself, called \u2018referendum\u2019, was organized based on politically motivated incentives; it is not legally binding,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>The governing parties added that the Communist Party, which is in opposition, is mainly responsible for the situation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis faction has openly supported the idea of a referendum [\u2026] undermining the activity of state institutions, promoting separatism,\u201d the statement read.<\/p>\n<p>Political expert Oazu Nantoi told Moldova.ORG that the \u201cscenario\u201d of the illegal referendum \u201cwas written at the Russian Embassy in Chisinau.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also pointed out that the Community Party was the one to back the referendum, having MP Irina Vlah going to the region and using people to promote her electoral campaign.
