The Head of the Gagauz Autonomous Territorial Unit, Mihail Formuzal urged the residents of the region to actively participate in the local referendum that is scheduled for Sunday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe higher the turnout, the better the voice of Gagauz people will be heard in the world,\u201d Mr. Formuzal said. \u201cIt is a unique opportunity. You should not fear anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

The decision to organize the referendum defies a ruling of the central authorities of Moldova and also of a court in Comrat \u2013 the administrative town of the region \u2013 which claimed that the referendum is unconstitutional.<\/p>\n

People will be asked whether they want to join the European Union or the Customs Union, together with Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan.<\/p>\n

The Gagauz Autonomous Territorial Unit encompasses over 150,000 people, mainly of Turkic origin, located in the southern part of Moldova.<\/p>\n
