The rapporteur for the Commission\u2019s proposal to lift visa requirements for Moldova, Tanja Fajon said in Chisinau on Friday that Moldovans are likely to travel without a visa in the EU\u2019s Schengen zone as of July 2014 if everything works according to the plan.<\/p>\n

In a joint press conference with Prime Minister Iurie Leanca, Ms. Fajon said that Moldova is the \u201cfirst country of the Eastern Partnership which has met all the benchmarks for the visa free regime.\u201d<\/p>\n

She added that her report which recommends the abolishment of visa requirements for Moldovan citizens will be voted within the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs on the 12th-13th of February.<\/p>\n

It will be followed later on by a plenary vote of the European Parliament.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe abolishment of visas will bring benefits to the holders of passports of the Republic of Moldova,\u201d Ms. Fajon said. \u201cIt will not only strengthen the economic and political cooperation but it will also strengthen people-to-people contacts.\u201d<\/p>\n

The official emphasized that this will mark the country\u2019s beginning of a European journey. She stressed that the visa free regime will \u201cnot take away the sovereignty\u201d of Moldova, \u201cbut it is a crucial step for the citizens.\u201d<\/p>\n
