A report <\/a>documented by the European Council on Foreign Relations says that the European Union should “restrain unhelpful voices within its own camp,” meaning that Romanian President’s statements on a possible reunification with Moldova would “open up a Pandora’s box of border challenges throughout the former Soviet Union.”<\/p>\n

Romanian President Traian Basescu previously declared that Romania’s next national priority would be the reunification of his country, namely with the Republic of Moldova, formerly known as Bessarabia.<\/p>\n

Bessarabia joined Romania after the Bolshevik Revolution in 1918 and was part of Romania until 1940. During that year, it was surrendered to the Soviet Union under the Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact signed secretly between Hitler and Stalin.<\/p>\n

Bessarabia is a synonym for Moldova and is used to identify present-day region of the Republic of Moldova that still remains incomplete since some northern and southern parts of Bessarabia belong to Ukraine today.<\/p>\n

The study suggests that the EU, together with its member states, should act as mediators between the coalition partners and sign the Association Agreement as soon as possible.<\/p>\n

“Given the potential volatility of Moldovan politics in 2014, the EU should be ready to mediate between the coalition partners and should speed up translation and legal scrubbing so as to cut the preparation period before the signature of the Association Agreement,” the analysis says.<\/p>\n

The author argues that Romania’s offer to help should be focused on speeding up the translation of the text of the Association Agreement.<\/p>\n
