The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) finds regretful the unilateral decision taken by the separatist leadership of Transnistria (east of Moldova) to curb the access of OSCE staff in the region.<\/p>\n

In a statement for Moldova.ORG, OSCE spokeswoman Paula Redondo Alvarez-Palencia said that OSCE sees this decision as unjustified and unilateral.<\/p>\n

“We regret this unilateral and unjustified decision that makes it difficult for us to fulfill our mandate,” the spokesperson said. “The OSCE remains neutral and impartial in its activity in Moldova and in its role as a mediator in the settlement process.”<\/p>\n

The intelligence-gathering forces in Transnistria, known as KGB, informed in a press release on Tuesday that OSCE observers will be able to enter the Transnistrian region only via Chisinau-Tighina and Criuleni-Dubasari “checkpoints.” Exception from the rule will make the OSCE staff participating at the Joint Control Commission (JCC), as well as the Head of the OSCE Mission to Moldova, Jennifer Brush.<\/p>\n

The KGB argues that the reason to limit access of OSCE staff from entering Transnistria follows allegedly critical comments made by Ms. Brush during a JCC session. However, the spokesperson said that Ambassador Brush has never participated in a JCC session before.<\/p>\n

Transnistrian conflict expert, Oazu Nantoi said that the decision of the separatist forces is not something unexpected.<\/p>\n

“Limiting access in the Transnistrian region for OSCE staff is a new Russian step towards radicalization and straining the situation by using Transnistria,” Oazu Nantoi told Moldova.ORG. “Curbing OSCE activity is a new face palm for the constitutional authorities and international community.”<\/p>\n

He argues that the whole responsibility for the situation falls exclusively on authorities in Chisinau which continue to accept “a settlement using the shameful 5+2 negotiation format, which cannot bring results.”<\/p>\n

Executive Director of Promo-LEX Association, Ion Manole maintains that Tiraspol-based authorities try to persuade the public opinion on the East Bank of the Nistru River that they have international recognition.<\/p>\n

“From what I can see, they are angry about Ms. Brush’s approach voiced in November 2013 in Kiev. This is the problem. Tiraspol got used to wrong approaches of the OSCE Mission. Now when they say how things really are, frustrations have emerged,” Ion Manole told Moldova.ORG.<\/p>\n

The expert claims that the OSCE Mission to Moldova has violated its mandate in the last few years. He refers to some reports drafted by the mission in the past which contradict the national legislation of Moldova.<\/p>\n
