Interview with Gheorghe Ursachi, director-general of the national wire telephony operator Moldtelecom <\/p>\n

BASA: Moldtelecom has posted intention to introduce the CDMA-standard wire telephony under commercial regime by late 2005. When will it accomplish this intention? <\/p>\n

URSACHI: A CDMA-standard wire telephony network will be built by late 2005 and it will cover 70 percent of Moldova’s territory. The first basic stations will be introduced under commercial regime in the first decade of November. <\/p>\n

BASA: What advantages does the CDMA-standard wire telephony offer compared with basic wire telephony? Is it cheaper than, are tariffs lower? <\/p>\n

URSACHI: The development programme for 2005 calls for modernization, extension and development of networks in 300 settlements, and networks in 170 settlements will be built on basis of CDMA technology. <\/p>\n

The cost of such a line is estimated at 350-380 dollars on average. They will be mainly built in settlements where the cost of a traditional telephone line is equal or higher than this sum. There are settlements where a traditional telephone line costs 7 ,000-8,000 lei (550-640 dollars) because of relief and long distance between houses. <\/p>\n

BASA: How much money Moldtelecom invested in the new service? <\/p>\n

URSACHI: Moldtelecom allocated 720 million lei for development in 2005. It used 437 million lei of this sum to implement the wire telephony service on basis of CDMA technology. <\/p>\n

BASA: How many subscribers to this type of telephony do you expect by late 2005? <\/p>\n

URSACHI: The number of Moldtelecom subscribers will grow by 70,000 in 2005. As many as 40,000 out of the total of 70,000 will be subscribed to the CDMA network (30,000 subscribers to the traditional wire telephony). Moldtelecom has 850,000 subscribers on January 1. <\/p>\n

BASA: What new products or services does Moldtelecom plan to introduce besides CDMA? <\/p>\n

URSACHI: First, we intend to implement the MPLS technology nationwide, and this would allow Moldtelecom to introduce very rapid and reliable data transportation services, no matter what settlement solicited the service.
