Unlike Voxtel and Moldcell, which are working in the Global System for Mobiles, or GSM standard, the government said the new licence will be awarded in the Code Division Multiple Access, on the 450 Mhz frequency. <\/p>\n

The domestic agency for regulation in telecommunication and informatics (ANRTI) was instructed to prepare a contest for selection of the new operator on competition bases. <\/p>\n

The minister of transportation and communication, Vasile Zgardan, said that eight million dollars "would be too much" for an operator that will face a tough competition on the local market. But Prime Minister Vasile Tarlev insisted on this amount. "It’s up to companies to decide whether they want to buy it or not," he said. Cabinet officials meanwhile maintain that "the CDMA standard is a new technology and Moldova is among the first in Europe to introduce such a technology." <\/p>\n

ANRTI representatives told BASA that no one till now has claimed the licence. <\/p>\n

The state-owned MoldTelecom S.A. had earlier announced its intention to acquire CDMA technology. <\/p>\n

The decision of the Chisinau government in July 2004 to award a CDMA-based licence to Transnistria’s Interdnestrcom for just one million dollar angered the business environment in Moldova.
