A New Jersey company, MaxMd (www.max.md), recently acquired near-exclusive rights to market the ".md" domain, which technically belongs to Moldova, New York Times said in its Monday online issue. On the other hand, the Moldovan authorities have dismissed this report. <\/p>\n

According to writer Tom Zeller, almost from the moment it was assigned in 1994, Western companies cut deals with Moldova – or cut deals with companies that cut deals with Moldova – in attempts to squeeze cash out of the obvious health care connotation of its domain. <\/p>\n

"Many Moldovan people thought of it as part of their national identity," said Vlad Spânu, the executive director of the Moldova Foundation in Virginia and a former diplomat at the Moldovan Embassy in Washington. "They didn’t think it should be licensed to foreign companies." <\/p>\n

Late last year, in exchange for a percentage of all sales, MaxMd became the latest company to secure long-term rights from Moldova to market .md in more than 90 countries, but Moldova is not among them. <\/p>\n

The National Institute of Health has already snapped up www.physician.md. Johnson & Johnson has purchased more than 120 addresses so far, according to New York Times. <\/p>\n

Contacted by BASA, Pavel Chirev, director of the national domain administrating centre MoldData, dismissed this report. "All rights on the national domain belong to Moldova and they cannot be sold. Since Moldova took over the domain from DotMD some years ago, it is administrated exclusively from Chisinau," Mr. Chirev noted. <\/p>\n

About 7,000 users of ".md" domain are registered with MoldData at present, he added. <\/p>\n

DotMD, a company founded by Frank M. Weyer, first began marketing the suffix to the medical community in 1998. In 2001, the Chisinau parliament amended the telecommunication law and ruled out its sale or lease to anyone. <\/p>\n

The Moldovan domain, which is one of more than 240 domain designations that were long ago assigned to individual countries, is regarded by experts as one of the most profitable.
