President Vladimir Voronin has met a well-known French football player, member of the executive committee of the International Federation of Football Associations (FIFA), member of the Executive Committee of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), deputy head of the French Football Federation, candidate to the post of UEFA chairman Michel Platini, who pays a visit to Chisinau following an invitation by the Moldovan Football Federation, according to the presidential press service. <\/p>\n

Welcoming the French guest in Moldova, Vladimir Voronin described the visit by Michel Platini as a great event in the country’s sports life. You are regarded, for good reason, as the legend of the world football, the head of state said. Your visit to Chisinau is an honour to us, and I am sure, it will give a strong impetus to develop the national sport, especially football, which becomes more and more popular, and more and more practised in Moldova, the president said. <\/p>\n

\"\"Michel Platini said he is impressed by the actions Moldova is taking now to revive and modernise the sports. He appreciated the efforts to identify and turn to account possibilities to finance this area, which have been made following an initiative and with the support of President Vladimir Voronin. He pointed out football’s social aspect, stressing that, no matter the Moldovan teams’ degree of involvement, the results within international competitions, the mass popularisation and the practise of this kind of sport give positive energy to the society’s life. Michel Platini said both the Moldovan authorities and the Moldovan Football Federation are aware of this truth, and consistently work to create adequate conditions to develop football. <\/p>\n

Michel Platini appreciated the quality of a new infrastructure for professional football, particularly the training centre of the national football teams from the Vadul lui Voda town, east of Chisinau, and the Chisinau-based FC Zimbru (Zimbru Football Club) stadium. Michel Platini also said he was familiarised with a project of the future Chisinau National Stadium, and in his capacity of high FIFA and EUFA official, he said these structures are set to contribute to building this stadium. <\/p>\n

Vladimir Voronin briefed the French guest on the authorities’ sports achievements and plans, as well as on his intention to propose to set up, within the government, a separate structure due to deal with professional sport issues.
