The initialing of the Association Agreement between Moldova and the European Union at the end of November last year is one of the country’s greatest achievements in 2013. An evaluation report of Expert-Group – an independent think-tank based in Chisinau – says that Moldova-EU deal will establish a “privileged relationship” that will align Moldovan legal framework to European standards, support reforms and liberalize trade between sides.<\/p>\n

The Association Agreement is expected to be signed before autumn 2014 as officials in Brussels said.<\/p>\n

The “unexpected” 8.1% economic growth is listed as Moldova’s second achievement in 2013 by the analysts from Expert-Group.<\/p>\n

“Economic growth by 8.1% during the first nine months of 2013 exceeded any expectations,” the report said. “A GDP growth is not excluded.”<\/p>\n

According to experts, should the GDP for 2013 increase, this will be Moldova’s highest economic growth in history. A degree of uncertainty is still present due to Russian ban on Moldovan wines that affected the economy.<\/p>\n

The launching of construction works of Iasi-Ungheni pipeline is another important accomplishment of Moldova. The report says that the pipeline that links Moldova to Romania (EU member state) will supply Moldova with one third of the country’s needs.<\/p>\n

“This will partly reduce Moldova’s energy dependence on Russia, but will not fully replace Russian natural gas,” the report says. The same analysis states that risks that could endanger the project still exist. One of them is the rivalry between Romanian President Traian Basescu and his Premier Victor Ponta. Moreover, Moldovan management can be politically-driven in 2014 since the country is expected to have elections later this year.<\/p>\n

EU lifting import quotas for Moldovan wine is listed by analysts as country’s fourth achievement. European Union removed any restrictions for imports of wine originating from Moldova from January 1, 2014. The move comes as an attempt to help Moldovan economy and as response to Russia’s ban on Moldovan wine.<\/p>\n

Last, but not least, Moldova succeeded to get a green light from the European Commission in terms of lifting visa requirements for citizens holding biometric passports.
