Moldova is likely to export Moldovan wine duty free to the European Union from January 1, 2014. A proposal in this regard was supported Tuesday by 503 MEPs in a plenary session of the European Parliament.<\/p>\n

The proposal was introduced by Romanian MEP of the European People’s Party (EPP), Iuliu Winkler to help Moldova offset losses resulting from Russia’s ban on imports of Moldovan wine.<\/p>\n

“Today’s vote sends a strong signal of political support for Moldova’s European choice,” said Mr. Winkler, who is also rapporteur on trade with Moldova.<\/p>\n

“The immediate liberalization of imports of Moldovan wines to the EU shows our political will to respond to unjustified and arbitrary pressures exerted by Russia on its Eastern partners. The measures backed today will help Moldovan wine producers to overcome the difficult situation caused by the Russian ban. Close cooperation between the EU institutions fast-tracked the EU’s response,” he added.<\/p>\n

According to the European Parliament, the MEPs amended the initial proposal to ensure the measures can enter into force from January 1, 2014.<\/p>\n

Russia banned wine imports from Moldova, citing quality concerns. The ban, which was introduced in September, is estimated to have caused losses of millions of US Dollars to Moldovan winemakers.<\/p>\n

The Russian move is largely seen as politically motivated, since Moldova is developing closer relations with the European Union, initialing an economic Association Agreement at the end of November.<\/p>\n

On the other side, Russia wants to have Moldova and other Eastern European countries, such as Ukraine and Georgia part of its Customs Union that will emerge into an Eurasian Union in 2015.  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
