The Russian monopoly on the Moldovan energy sector will be enhanced if Moldova will join the Russia-led Eurasian Union, says a report<\/a> issued on Tuesday by Expert-Group, an independent think-tank based in Moldova.<\/p>\n

The Eurasian Union is an economic structure due to be established in 2015. Known also as the Customs Union, the project will unite Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and probably Armenia and will set up a common tariff scale for their trade.<\/p>\n

Expert-Group says that joining the Eurasian Union will determine Moldova to cancel its membership in the EU Energy Community. Moreover, Moldova will no longer bring their energy legislation in line with the European standards.<\/p>\n

Such a move would have negative effects, experts say.<\/p>\n

“The Republic of Moldova will no longer have the necessary stimulus to modernize the energy system as well as connect and integrate with the European energy system,” the report shows. “As a result, the enhancement of the energy security will be compromised, being impossible to remove the monopolies and diversify the channels of delivery of the energy products (electricity and natural gas).”<\/p>\n

The Expert-Group think tank maintains that it is uncertain whether Gazprom will diminish the gas prices for its partners if they will join the Customs Union.
