Trade between Moldova and the United States did not increase significantly after the Jackson-Vanik Amendment was lifted by the U.S. Congress at the end of 2012.<\/p>\n

Statistics <\/a>show a slight increase in U.S. exports starting in April 2013, when the trade in goods was valued $5.4 million as compared to $2.9 million in April 2012. American imports increased from $1 million in April 2012 to $3.3 million in April 2013.<\/p>\n

A similar development can be traced a month later. U.S. exports to Moldova valued $5 million in May 2013, while the trade the year before summed up to $2.2 million. The United States imported goods worth $2.7 million in May 2013 and only $1.9 million in May 2012.<\/p>\n

Steven Woehrel, Specialist in European Affairs at the Congressional Research Service (CRS) said in a comment for Moldova.ORG that he does not foresee any important changes in the trade between Moldova and the United States after the Jackson-Vanik Amendment was lifted.<\/p>\n

“It was mainly a political, symbolic move,” Steven Woehrel said.<\/p>\n

According to Woehrel, who closely researches the political, economic and social developments in Moldova, the U.S. President Barack Obama “already waived the provision of Jackson-Vanik for Moldova on a regular basis before it was lifted.”<\/p>\n

That means Moldova has been treated under a Generalized System of Preferences since 1995. The system provides duty free treatment for certain Moldovan exports to the United States.<\/p>\n

“In addition to providing a positive political signal in our ties with Moldova, the lifting has some advantages for the US albeit very minor ones, given the very small amount of US-Moldovan trade,” Mr. Woehrel stressed.<\/p>\n

The Jackson-Vanik Amendment was imposed on the Soviet Union in 1974 because of human rights violations. After the dissolution of the USSR, the Amendment applied to all new established republics, including Moldova.<\/p>\n
