Experts foresee that joining the Russia-led Eurasian Union would have many disadvantages for Moldova. Economic analyst, Alexandru Fala, told Adevarul newspaper<\/a> that following an adherence to the Customs Union with Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan, Moldova will face an increase in customs duty.<\/p>\n

“Given that over 70% of imports originate from countries other than those members of the future Customs Union, the prices will increase significantly,” Alexandru Fala said. According to him, the price hike will primarily affect the population, since the first products to become more expensive are medicaments.<\/p>\n

“Even a discount in gas prices flowing from Russia will not be able to compensate the economic loss,” Mr. Fala said.<\/p>\n

Based on the analysis by the Expert-Group Center, Moldova will benefit only if it will strengthen its economic ties with the European Union, forming the Free Trade Zone “which will lead to a decrease in prices and a yearly increase in GDP by 6.4%.”<\/p>\n
