The postponement of an International Monetary Fund (IMF) Mission visit to Moldova sparks questions among the economists from Chisinau. The international financial organization announced on Monday, February 25th that the IMF mission that was scheduled to arrive in Moldova this week has been postponed.<\/p>\n

Economic analyst Vlad Bercu thinks that this work trip is delayed due to economic reasons.<\/p>\n

“The postponement is caused by economic grounds which were politically created by the political crisis which began in January,” Vlad Bercu told RFE\/RL<\/a> in an interview.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, he believes the postponement is a negative sign for both donors and investors. According to him, the IMF is interested in fiscal policies, a stable financial situation and greater revenue among taxpayers.<\/p>\n

The IMF Chief of the Mission to Moldova, Tokhir Mirzoev, urged the authorities to tackle the issue concerning Banca de Economii and adopt the necessary fiscal policies to support the budget. Based on the statement, it seems that the Moldovan side did not comply with the recommendations given by the IMF in November 2012.<\/p>\n

“We urge the authorities to proceed with the implementation of measures needed to complete the sixth and final reviews of the program—including stabilization of Banca de Economii and adoption of necessary fiscal policies to support the budget,” Tokhir Mirzoev said.<\/p>\n

Moldovan Premier Vlad Filat told reporters on Tuesday that the IMF Mission could not do their job amidst political instability.<\/p>\n

“In such a situation, when there is no certainty and political stability, the IMF Mission cannot implement their agenda,” Vlad Filat said.<\/p>\n
