After a period of uncertainty regarding the energetic strategy of the Republic of Moldova, the Government approved on Wednesday a document that foresees the projects expected to be implemented in this regard by 2030.<\/p>\n

Moldova’s biggest challenges in terms of energy supply are the equipment used. Roughly 75% of it is outdated. As a result, over 7% of the natural gas has been lost during 2001-2008. The energy loss of today is being rated at 5.5%.<\/p>\n

Moldova is entirely dependent on Russian natural gas resources. Over 1,152 million cubic meters of natural gas were supplied to Moldova in 2011. Volume of gas exported by Russia’s Gazprom via Moldova to Balkan states exceeded 19,889,000 cubic meters in 2011.<\/p>\n

The state’s oil reserves are very low. The estimates show some 2.1 million tones of petroleum to be found in Moldova. However, only 627,000 tones can be immediately pulled-out. They are located in the southern part of the country in two sites: Cahul county where it was previously extracted and Cantemir county where the oil resources have not been exploited yet.<\/p>\n

The main objective concerning the energetic strategy of Moldova peaks at 2020 when the country is expected to fully integrate in the domestic energy market of the European Union. By that time, Moldovan legislation will be brought in line with the acquis of the Energy Community meeting the judicial compatibility and management of the market.<\/p>\n

Moldova signed in March 2010 the protocol regarding the accession to the Energy Community. The Russian side is unsatisfied with Moldova’s decision to join the Energy Community, a project that would alienate the country from Russia’s energy deal. They told Moldova to reject the EU’s proposal in exchange for a discount on natural gas.<\/p>\n

Later on, the Moldovan Government announced that they want to be granted a four-year delay in implementing the EU Energy Agreement hoping to get the price reduction from Russia. However, so far, no new contract has been agreed and no discount is being foreseen. Now, Moldova’s next deadline to bring their legislation in line with the EU regulations in terms of energy security is 2020 not 2016.<\/p>\n

A joint pipeline with Romania which is expected to supply reversibly natural gas in cases of emergency will go into force in 2014. This project will help Moldova benefit from the current connections Romania has with Hungary and the future pipeline linking Bulgaria that is being currently under construction.<\/p>\n

Moldovan Government expects the pipeline with Romania to serve as additional interface not only for Balkan states when South Stream pipeline will be developed. As a Stratfor analysis shows, South Stream will help Russia strengthen its position as Balkan’s main energy resource provider. When the pipeline will be operational, the energy consumption in the former Yugoslav countries will rise significantly from the current 15%.<\/p>\n

Moldova expects to register its first outcomes in 2012-2020 timeframe, when less-costly energy efficiency mechanisms will be developed and renewable energy sources will be used. The Government promises to insert energy production and storage technology and carbon-capture devices which are currently under trial version, but are expected to develop largely and become more accessible by 2020.  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
