Moldova ranks 115th out of 185 in the 2013 Index of Economic Freedom. The Index was issued by The Heritage Foundation in partnership with The Wall Street Journal.<\/p>\n

Moldova’s economic freedom score is 55.5. The numbers show that the country has a “mostly unfree” rating.<\/p>\n

Moldova’s score is higher by 1.1 points when compared to last year’s score, “reflecting a notable improvement in the management of government spending and a modest gain in trade freedom.”<\/p>\n

The Index has revealed that Moldova’s score is below the European and even world averages in terms of economic freedom. The country ranks 39th out of 43 European countries.<\/p>\n

However, the data shows that the Moldovan economy has progressively recovered from “a sharp economic slowdown” which had been registered in the past three years. The Index reports that corruption remains the most stringent problem of the system, the judiciary being vulnerable to political interference.<\/p>\n

The Heritage Foundation finds some more shortcomings related to the Moldovan economy in relation to the entrepreneurial climate and the public sector.<\/p>\n

“The ongoing transition to a more stable market-oriented economy remains fragile,” declared the report. “The government’s overall commitment to enhancing the entrepreneurial climate and advancing economic freedom has been uneven. Despite a number of privatizations, the public sector continues to play a dominant role in the economy.”<\/p>\n

The study also finds that the investment framework does not contribute to a favorable investment growth. Moldova’s financial sector is “relatively stable,” but government interference still exists which makes the overall financial intermediation remain superficial.<\/p>\n

The highest economic freedom is registered in Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand and Switzerland.<\/p>\n

Moldova’s neighbor Romania ranks 59th, whereas Ukraine is on the 161th place.<\/p>\n
