Moldova succeeded to extend the contract for 2013 between Moldovagaz and Russian natural gas supplier Gazprom, Infotag reported. Therefore, the former soviet republic will be provided natural gas for one more year, even though it experienced difficulties lately.<\/p>\n

“The prices on gas purchased from the Russian concern Gazprom will be US$5 lower in the 1Q2013, than in the 4Q2012 and will stand at US$386 per 1,000 cubic meters,” the source informed.<\/p>\n

The last contract between Moldova and Russia expired in December 2011 and was extended several times. The failure in signing a new contract was due to Moldova’s decision to join the EU Energy Community. The initiative was not welcomed by Moscow and the negotiations over a new long-term contract have been difficult and without any positive outcomes.<\/p>\n

However, Russia promised Moldova to get a 30% discount in price for natural gas if they will give up any negotiation with the European partners. Amid pressure from Kremlin, the Moldovan authorities asked the EU postpone by 4 years the implementation of the Moldova-EU energy agreement.<\/p>\n

Moldova’s breakaway region of Transnistria is an issue in Moldova-Russia energy relation. The secessionist region has a huge debt for Russian natural gas which is unpaid for several years now.<\/p>\n

In a public statement in Chisinau, the leader from Tiraspol Evgheny Shevchuk said that the “debts are paid only by cowards.” Transnistria’s debt hikes to $3.5 billion. The separatist administration insists that Moldova should discharge the debt. Moldovagaz owes Gazprom over $680 million, this being the debt of 2006-2008. Less than 8% of this amount is the debt of Moldova, the rest belonging to the Transnistrian region.
