Romanian Ambassador to Moldova, Marius Lazurca says that Moldova needs more than one source of natural gas procurement. Republic of Moldova relies entirely on the gas resources from Russia and does not have any alternative sources.<\/p>\n

In an interview with Radio Free Europe\/Radio Liberty, Marius Lazurca explained that a Moldova-Romania pipeline will help Moldova diversify its sources of getting natural gas and so it will become less dependent on long-term contracts with Russia.<\/p>\n

“Republic of Moldova will have access to a whole range of natural gas resources,” Mr. Lazurca said. “Moldova will basically have access to a free market of natural gas.”<\/p>\n

Romania and Moldova are planning on building a gas pipeline which will connect two cities from both banks of Prut River. According to the Ambassador, the project implementation will proceed in February 2013, whereas the works termination is planned for September 2013. He is hopeful that the pipeline will be functional at the end of next year.<\/p>\n

If implemented, the project will deliver Moldova natural gas directly from the North Sea. The alternative solution can help the country not to be dependent on the Russian energy resources.<\/p>\n

Amid pressure from Russia, Moldova recently postponed the implementation of the energy agreement with the European Union and requested an extension of the implementation period until 2020. Russia promised Moldova to get a 30% discount in price for natural gas if they will give up any negotiation with the European partners, although it is yet unknown if any decrease in price is actually expected in the near future.<\/p>\n
