Moldova got the US House of Representatives’ approval on Friday to be exempted from Jackson-Vanik Amendment. The regulation should no longer apply to Moldova after it will pass the Senate of the United States of America at the end of November.<\/p>\n

The bill — approved with 365 votes in favor and 43 against by the House of Representatives — expresses the following content: “Permanent Normal Trade Relations for Moldova authorizes the President to: (1) determine that the Jackson-Vanik Amendment should no longer apply to Moldova, and (2) extend permanent normal trade relations treatment to the products of Moldova.”<\/p>\n

The provision of this bill approves “the extension of nondiscriminatory treatment” to the traded products from Moldova. Russian Federation is also facing the same treatment within the framework of a joint bill that includes both Moldova and Russia to be exempted from this amendment.<\/p>\n

The U.S. Congress has learned that Moldova and Russia comply with the freedom of emigration requirements. Moreover, both countries are members of the World Trade Organization.<\/p>\n

“By ending Jackson-Vanik and granting Permanent Normal Trade Relations to Moldova, Moldovan businesses would gain additional and privileged access to the U.S. export market.<\/p>\n

Moldovan goods currently have access to U.S. markets through exemptions to the legislation that have been applied on an annual basis,” the U.S. Embassy in Chisinau told Moldova.ORG in August this year.<\/p>\n

Jackson-Vanik Amendment was imposed to the Soviet Union in 1974 on the grounds of human rights violations. After the dissolution of the USSR, the Amendment applied to all new established republics, including Moldova.<\/p>\n
