Republic of Moldova deals with an economic crisis because it is mainly dependent on the partner states that face the same problem. The conclusion was stated by Valeriu Lazar, Moldovan Minister of Economy in an interview for Radio Free Europe\/Radio Liberty.<\/p>\n

“It was not a surprise for us,” Valeriu Lazar said. “We anticipated this slowdown in economy growth since the beginning of the year. We are very dependent by the situation in our partner countries in terms of bilateral trade and economic relations.”<\/p>\n

Moldova experienced a harsh drought this summer and the effects are now obvious. Thousands of hectares of agricultural products were compromised leading to an increase in prices on basic goods.<\/p>\n

“[The drought] determined us to lose over 1.5% of our economic growth this year,” the Minister of Economy said, referring to the drought effects.<\/p>\n

Experts forecast even more hikes in prices and a decrease in wheat exports due to the shortages of this year. According to a UN report, agriculture contributes to about 16.2 % of Moldova’s GDP. It is the most important source of livelihoods and foreign exchange earnings, closely following the services sector 63.5% and the industry 20.3%.<\/p>\n
